چکیده

Country-wide data from the 2008-2009 cholera epidemic in Zimbabwe came from the authors of Reyburn et al.4 Country-level data was used in this exercise due to the unavailability of adequate city-level data, as in the other illustrative examples. We fit this model with maximum-likelihood via iterated filtering (using the mif2 algorithm, an improved version of that described in Ionides et al5) starting at the first week of the data. We fit two parameters in this model, the transmission rate (β), and the duration of infectiousness (1/γ), and three initial conditions, the number of infectious (I(0)), exposed (E(0)), and susceptible (S(0)) individuals at the time the first case was observed. Other parameters were based on published literature or expert opinion. Parameter values are shown in Table S3-1.

The Impact of a One-Dose versus Two-Dose Oral Cholera Vaccine Regimen in Outbreak Settings: A Modeling Study

BACKGROUND In 2013, a stockpile of oral cholera vaccine (OCV) was created for use in outbreak response, but vaccine availability remains severely limited. Innovative strategies are needed to maximize the health impact and minimize the logistical barriers to using available vaccine. Here we ask under what conditions the use of one dose rather than the internationally licensed two-dose protocol m...

The Case for Reactive Mass Oral Cholera Vaccinations

INTRODUCTION The outbreak of cholera in Zimbabwe intensified interest in the control and prevention of cholera. While there is agreement that safe water, sanitation, and personal hygiene are ideal for the long term control of cholera, there is controversy about the role of newer approaches such as oral cholera vaccines (OCVs). In October 2009 the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts advised the ...

Oral Cholera Vaccine Coverage during an Outbreak and Humanitarian Crisis, Iraq, 2015

During November-December 2015, as part of the 2015 cholera outbreak response in Iraq, the Iraqi Ministry of Health targeted ≈255,000 displaced persons >1 year of age with 2 doses of oral cholera vaccine (OCV). All persons who received vaccines were living in selected refugee camps, internally displaced persons camps, and collective centers. We conducted a multistage cluster survey to obtain OCV...

Neighborhood-targeted and case-triggered use of a single dose of oral cholera vaccine in an urban setting: Feasibility and vaccine coverage

INTRODUCTION In June 2015, a cholera outbreak was declared in Juba, South Sudan. In addition to standard outbreak control measures, oral cholera vaccine (OCV) was proposed. As sufficient doses to cover the at-risk population were unavailable, a campaign using half the standard dosing regimen (one-dose) targeted high-risk neighborhoods and groups including neighbors of suspected cases. Here we r...
